Dr. Fraz Umar, MD MRCP (UK)

Cardiologist

Dr. Fraz Umar graduated from medical school from the University of Vienna, Austria in 2003. He did Internal Medicine residency at Birmingham University Teaching Hospitals where he obtained a Membership to the Royal College of Physicians (UK). He entered the cardiology specialty program in 2008 and successfully completed his sub-specialty training in Heart Failure and Devices in 2017 where he served as Chief Cardiology Resident. He was appointed as Cardiology Consultant at the University of Coventry in Warwickshire Hospitals NHS Trust (UK) as a heart failure and devices specialist. In 2018, he moved to George Elliot Hospital NHS Trust (UK) to establish an integrated heart failure and complex devices program.

Dr. Fraz Umar moved to Canada in 2019 for an Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Fellowship at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (2019-2020). Following this, Dr. Umar also completed a Pulmonary Hypertension Fellowship at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (2020-2021).

Dr. Umar's clinical interests include optimizing the management of patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and pulmonary hypertension. His other interest include cardiovascular risk reduction and primary prevention of heart disease. Dr. Umar's research interest lies in investigating the hemodynamic effects of myocardial scar and ischemic cardiomyopathy. In this regard, Dr. Umar has published over 25 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to book chapters and presented his research at international conferences.

In November 2021, Dr. Umar joined the Ottawa Cardiovascular Center and brings a wealth of experience in managing general cardiology, heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. He also secured privileges at the Ottawa Hospital General Campus in the Department of Medicine as an Assistant Professor.

Dr. Umar is pleased to receive consultations for heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, general cardiology issues and cardiovascular risk reduction.

Dr. Umar is a keen cyclist and loves being outdoors.
