It is with profound sadness that we inform you of the passing of Dr. Joel Niznick. Dr. Niznick was born in Fort Francis, Ontario before moving to Winnipeg for most of his upbringing. He attended medical school at the University of Manitoba and from there moved to Toronto to complete his Internal Medicine training and ultimately came to Ottawa to finish his cardiology training at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
Dr.Niznick led the development of the Ottawa Cardiovascular Centre, one of Ontario’s most advanced office based cardiology offices, providing quality care to 10’s of thousands of patients over the last 35 years. Dr. Niznick was a forward thinker and strong patient advocate. His focus was on translation of knowledge into practice utilizing database development and electronic records. He believed strongly in providing continuity of care to his patients and felt they were part of his family. He was very protective of his patients, many of whomhad been with him for decades.
In addition to his strong focus on patient care, he was an exemplary teacher and strong proponent of the link between community practice and the Ottawa Hospital and Ottawa Heart Institute. He served on teaching staff for over 3 decades at these institutions.
The loss of Dr. Niznick to the cardiology and medical community in Ottawa has been profound. The Ottawa Cardiovascular Centre will endeavor to continue the quality of care he provided and protect the values that he held most dear.
If you were a patient of Dr. Niznick’s, we will strive to keep you appointment however you may be referred back to your primary care providers and can be re-referred as necessary. We trust you will have patience as we do our best in a challenging time.
